Blog Post #5 Coach Carter

Today I will be analyzing the movie Coach Carter for its Representation and the topic's it covers.

This is a Sports, Drama film that is mainly focused on the athletes improvement as people rather then improving as competitors. With him commonly benching his players for bad grades and other problems with their behavior, in one instance he kicked a player off of the team for bad behavior. The main character of this film isn't just one player or coach, it is the entire team with each having their own story and character development. This movie helps push the idea that becoming a better person is better then becoming a winner/ a better athlete but as the movie continues the plot begins to shift to becoming a better person leads to becoming a better athlete and a better winner.

This movie subverts many other sports movies with it being mainly being about the athletes trying to improve as people, rather then them trying to just focus on basketball. This movie also goes over the area that they live in and it is a representation of many areas that young African Americans and people of minority races with most having to struggle in their life. This struggle and the want to move out of their bad community leads many to try and use sports such as basketball as a way to escape the troubles they are dealing with. It also acts as a way to move out of that area and that situation, this in turn leads to many wanting all of the glory for themselves so that they can leave. But this glory corrupts many young African Americans minds leading to them making decisions that could hurt other people.

This also connects with my film because the people in the film feel as though the only way to get out of their city is through basketball and their skills in the game. This connection is also made to compare the ideas of the main character of my film vs. The coach in the movie. Which is that my main character wants to make it out of his home town because of the struggles that come with that area, while on the other hand the coach has come to live with this area but still wants to help his players get out of their certain situations like the lack of financial support from parents. This connection leads to many similarities throughout the film with Sequin meeting his lowest point during the season and learning to become a better person and overcome that circumstance that he was put into.
