Blog Post #11 Lighting in Film Part: One

Today I will be analyzing the film Top Gun Maverick and its ability to use lighting to help convey its scenes.

Top Gun Maverick is a sequel to the original Top Gun movie, this movie is about "Maverick" a fighter plane flyer who has been flying planes at a high level for 30+ years. This movie uses lighting to convey the flying scenes with more intensity. The most used form of lighting in this movie is natural lighting with the sun being used as the main source of light in most of the scenes that involve natural light. The use of little fill light helps convey the shadows in the scenes and it also allows for the movie to feel more realistic for the audience. This realism allows for the plot of the movie to be conveyed also with Maverick having to seemingly risk his life every time that they take flight. This helps with the overall idea of facing the fear of death that is shadowing this movie. The flight scenes don't feel fake and studio made because of this lighting helping it feel so realistic. This can help the audience feel more engaged in the action sequences of the film and also the overall Todorov plot structure of the film.

For example even in this poster there is a use of natural lighting through the sun gleaming in the shot and also how the sun shines on the characters faces to better demonstrate their expressions. Also the use of natural lighting helps the poster feel more realistic and it gives the potential audience a good idea as to what the film will use as its main source of light. This overall helps with the promotion and advertising of the film, but also the characters in the film with the natural lighting showing them having certain actions that may correlate to the film. This is an aspect that I hope to include in my film to help better demonstrate certain camera angles and the emotions of the characters. This helps me convey the tone and mood in the shots along with the pathos being used in the plot sequence.
