Blog Post #12 Lighting in Film Part: Two
This is a continuation of the last blog, this being the second of the lighting in film blogs.
Analyzing the lighting in time frame 00:30 - 1:00 of the clip
The start of this scene uses natural lighting to create a dimly lit environment for the camera this allows for the facial expressions of Maverick to be fully developed because of the lighting being able to perfectly light his face. The camera then pans to him accelerating the plane. The natural lighting is then shown as only a portion of his hand has light on it, this helps convey that there is natural lighting still in effect in this shot. The camera then cuts to the fighter jet starting to boost its engines with every inch of it being lit up by the "sun" via the natural lighting effect. The next shot is of Maverick inside of his fighter jet, this shot uses the natural lighting to slightly dim his face and to create a dreamy environment with the sun slightly shading through the clouds up above. In the next shot the use of the natural background is evident as it is shown through the reflection of Mavericks helmet. Then when the class is watching him all of their faces are lit up using the natural lighting techniques with a warm main light and little to no filler light in the shots. The lighting in this next scene is evident as the sun is reflecting off of the camera as it lights up Maverick in this shot. The next shot shows the environment that they are in and the natural light from the sun lights up all of the terrain that he has to fly through. through the next shot the plane and maverick are both being lit up by the sun and it is even shown in the shot as the main source of light with no filler since the shadows become apparent after each turn of the jet.
This connects to my film because of the natural lighting that will be used in the first 2 minutes of my film. This is because it will most likely be taken place outside and the sun will be used to convey the main source of light with little to no filler light to help convey the shadows in the scene better. This will also help with the realism of the film with it being set in a natural environment that is seen almost every day for the majority of people in the world.
