Blog Post #13 Sound in film Part: One
The use of sound in the film The Dark Knight, for the suspense that it creates and non-diegetic uses to convey the details of each scene without actually seeing what happens.
The use of sound to create suspense is evident throughout this film with the soundtrack being used to create a dark and ominous feeling throughout the film. This suspense helps keep the audience engaged throughout the film with little to no stoppage in the plot. Also when the ominous sound track starts it is an indicator that something bad is about to happen and it works very well as a starting and stopping points for the plot. This suspense is also created by the diegetic sounds that are created for this film, an example of this are the explosions that are used during the highway scene in the film. This scene was able to capture the audiences attention through the constant diegetic sounds that were displayed to make it seem as though the viewers were in the film experiencing it for themselves. While the realism in the film during these moments is not very good it is still able to hold the audiences attention through the action packed sequences that are able to hold onto the viewers attention and keep them invested in the plot.
Also the sound can help convey the setting of the film with "Gotham City" being the main setting in the plot. This sound helps convey mainly the violence and crime in this city. With the constant use of sirens being used in order to convey that the police in this city are very hard at work. Another example is the gun shots being heard a lot, this conveys that the film is going to be integrated with a lot of action sequences because batman will have to fight this crime. It also conveys that there will most likely be a lot of drama in this film since the loud bangs of noise and constant sirens that convey that a bad aura is building in the film.
