Blog Post #17 Camera Shots in Film Part: One

 Today I will be analyzing the film Holes, this film uses its camera shots to display the landscape of the scene and the emotions of the characters better.



This movie is a very well shot live-action Disney movie that coneys a story using long distance shots to convey the environment and help push the plot and convey the prop's character theory that is used in the film. This is through the vastness in most of the scenes, this conveys the emptiness for the characters that are shown. The main character goes from eager to see the camp, then after seeing the vastness of the dried up lake that they are in he soon starts to lose hope in trying to have fun and enjoy his time at the camp. Also using many shots to show the unbearable heat of the sun in the film and how it affects the characters in the film, this helps convey the invulnerability of the main characters in the first part of the falling climax when they find the capsized boat. This is because throughout the film by using camera shots to convey the emotions and tiredness of the characters because of the sun, this in turn makes it is easier to show why the two main characters would be tired and in desperate need of water throughout the falling action of the Todorov structure.





For example, in this shot it truly emphasizes the vastness of the dessert that they are in with a slight mountain top seemingly miles in the distance from the main characters of the film. This helps convey the plot of the movie with the escape at the end feeling like a more dire situation because of the lack of resources in the area. That is another thing this shot does well is the lack of vegetation and resources throughout the entirety of the scene. This allows for the sequences throughout the movie to feel more stressful due to the lack of an escape plan from the work camp. This shot's ability to captivate on the sheer size of desert also helps convey the lack of a refuge in the distance and also the direness in the situation due to the lack of any clouds in the sky. This detail helps convey that it is extremely hot out in their location because of the lack of clouds and also the lack of vast vegetation which can't grow in areas of drought like conditions.

Today I will be analyzing The Longest Yard, which is a Sports Films and how it is good at helping convey the other genres in that film through its different micro elements, specifically Mise-en-Scene. The Longest Yard The Longest Yard is a football movie that is centered around a star quarterback who got into trouble with the law, this getting him arrested. Then this brings up the location which is centered in a prison with the quarterback ("Paul Crewe", The main character) having to put together a football team to compete with the guards of that prison. This is because the prison wants to humiliate the prisoners and make it seem as though they are nothing compared to the guards of the prison, it will also re-assure the public about their prison security and their overall security system.
