Blog Post #23 Costuming in Film Part: One

Today I will be analyzing the film "White Man Can't Jump" and its use of costuming to create a sense of relatability and reality in the scenes through it's realistic costuming.

This movie uses costuming to convey it's ideas of "street basketball" and how the costuming is more everyday clothes rather then a uniform. This helps convey that the scene is set in an environment where wearing street clothes and everyday clothes is normal. It also helps the representation of people who play pickup basketball because of the use of simple clothing. This simplicity helps bring most of the scenes in the movie to life but it also brings out the risk in it. This is through the more unprofessional style of gameplay that helps convey the costuming and plot of the scene bringing it together as a whole. An example of the uses of costuming throughout the film is when the main characters are playing basketball outside. With most scenes that are placed outside having beach like costuming and light colored clothes to help also convey with the lighting that is used in these scenes which is commonly the sun. These light colored clothes are evident in real life too since lighter colors do not absorb as much sun. This helps portray the realness in these specific scenes and it helps the audience further relate to the film.

This shot uses the tan colors of the costumes that the actors are wearing to nicely contrast with the dimmer lighting in the scene. This use of costuming and lighting helps portray that it is day-time in the scene and also that they are outdoors. Even the designs of the shirts that they are wearing convey that it is in a hotter time of the year due to the light and non-absorbing colors, so it could be spring or summer in this film.
