Blog Post #7 Drama in Film

Today I will be analyzing the film, The Shawshank Redemption, and how the drama features in the film allow for it to be one of the most suspenseful and emotional films of all time.

The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption

This movie is about someone who was wrongfully accused of murdering his wife and affair partner, this leads to him being sentenced to life. At prison he learns more about the ways of life and how to overcome the struggles that have plagued his life. Using these wise words of advice, he dedicates himself to a new way of life and eventually he wants to start a new one that is stood with foundations that he has gained through his new found experiences. This leads to him creating a tunnel out of the prison to start a new and problem free life. But this is only the face value of the movie with subtle hints to the real and deeper message of not giving up on life and always finding a new way to overcome the situation that you are dealing with.

In The Shawshank Redemption (1994), there's a scene where it's written that "Brooks was here, so was Red". This is because Brooks and Red were actually there. : r/shittymoviedetails

This topic had been explored by giving ideas about harming yourself instead of facing consequences not through the words that are used but by the shots that are used. This movie also uses two main characters to show the contrast in their beliefs and ideas and this leads to character development for both of these characters. With the younger character that was accused feeling like there was no way out of the problems that he had faced while the older and wiser character seeming as though through the clouds in the sky, light will always beam through. These opposing views leads to a nice contrast that is used throughout the movie to create a sense of hope in between the moments of doubt.

This compares to my film because it gives a very good message of not giving up on yourself and even if you feel trapped there is always a way out. In the movie The Shawshank redemption the characters feel as though they are trapped and have no way to restart and create a new life for themselves, this is done through them being held in a prison. But in my movie while the main character does feel as though he is trapped and believes that there are very few ways out, the setting is instead based in a city that has been controlled by violence. The difference between this film and my film is that the main character in The Shawshank Redemption is forced to break the law in order to find his new life, while the main character in my film is trying to avoid breaking the law while searching and trying to succeed in finding a new life.
