Blog Post #8 Action in Film

An Action Film that I will be analyzing today is Bullet Train and how it uses the action in the film to better help the audience stay engaged throughout the movie.

Bullet Train

This movie uses its action to convey the plot of the movie and continue to progress it's plot forward. An example of this is when the son's bodyguard's (Tangerine and Lemon) fight the assassin (Ladybug) and eventually lose the brief case that had a large sum of money. This action sequence allowed for the film to move to the next sequence which is trying to find the assassin and secure the brief case which in turn leads them to the next plot point of the rising action segment. So this action throughout the film allows for the plot to flow smoothly in between each sequence because the characters and audience both know what the next goal is because of the outcome of the action scenes.

This also allows for the film to display its main idea which is the idea of fate, with many characters in the film seemingly already having their fate sealed when the movie started. This is explored by creating the idea of luck and karma. These are displayed as polar opposites in the film with some characters seemingly having a large amount of luck like Ladybug, who is the only crucial character who is able to survive in the film. This is where the idea of fate is used mostly with luck being directly correlated with the fate of the character. The more luck that you have mostly means that your fate is of a happier ending. While the opposite correlates with the people with bad karma, mostly with their fate being that they will not leave the train.

This will connect with my film because of the use of action sequences to keep the plot moving forward. This also helps expand and strengthen the overall main idea and the use of Freytag's Pyramid. It does this by making it so that the action scenes lead to an outcome that uses the main idea. For example when Ladybug gets stabbed by the poison he somehow gets an antidote in time to heal himself, this uses the idea of fate and luck. This use of the main topic of the film is the similarity to my film with the action sequences of my film helping push the main idea that there is always hope even in the most dire of situations. Like the scout coming up to Saquon after his outdoor game offering him a spot on the team and a beam of hope.
