Blog Post #35 The Main Character

 Today I will be analyzing the importance of main characters in film and how they are able to control the pacing of the film.



The main character of a show or film is the one that is the focus of the plot. This can be through their actions, or through the actions of side characters of that film. Mainly though the plot centers around the actions of the main character. But it is also very common for a side character to be the one to start the rising the action in the film at hand. for example, in the film "Iron Man", this is through the actions and decisions of "Tony Stark" aka "Iron Man" the rising action is started when Tony goes to an event to display his new "Jericho" missile. But then he is ambushed by a terrorist group, this is the start of the rising action in this film. 



But in another example, the side character Hella in the film "Thor Ragnarök", is instead the one to lead the hero/main character on his plot. This is an example of Propp's character theory with Hella being multiple characters as the "Dispatcher" too start the rising action in the plot and also as the "Villian" being the one who is the main threat throughout the film. This use of the theory allows for the plot to run smoothly, and it is able to put the main character through events that surprise them creating a more thrilling experience for these types of films.



So, the main character can start the rising action, or it can be done by a side character but at all times the main characters actions and decisions, whether right or wrong, dictate the flow of the movie. For example, the main character in a film could cheat on a math test that was given out by the teacher. This doesn't make them the dispatcher because that would be the teacher but through their decisions to cheat the main character changes the flow of the film by now having new plot point that is created.



This connects to my film because the plot will mostly be driven through the actions of the main character and the rising action is set by the coach of the high school team. The coach in my film will act as the dispatcher, while Saquon builds on the rising action through his decisions and the positive and negative consequences of them. Im mainly doing this to follow the Propp's Character Theory and allow for my film to stay engaging and entertaining throughout.

Blog Post #6 Sports in Film

Today I will be analyzing The Longest Yard, which is a Sports Films and how it is good at helping convey the other genres in that film through its different micro elements, specifically Mise-en-Scene. The Longest Yard The Longest Yard is a football movie that is centered around a star quarterback who got into trouble with the law, this getting him arrested. Then this brings up the location which is centered in a prison with the quarterback ("Paul Crewe", The main character) having to put together a football team to compete with the guards of that prison. This is because the prison wants to humiliate the prisoners and make it seem as though they are nothing compared to the guards of the prison, it will also re-assure the public about their prison security and their overall security system.
