Blog Post #46 Titling Sequence in Film

Image
Today I will be talking about the titling sequence in film and in my film. The Titling sequence in film can help convey the tone and mood of the upcoming film. This is because of the background of the title, the color of the title, and the font of the title. So the background of the title can help set the tone of the film through a solid color like the animated show, "Invincible"'s title card or set the scene of the first shot. These are both effective with the scenery background helping forward the plot to the next sequence and the main color helping to build the mood and tone of the film. Another aspect of the titling sequence is the coloring of the title, this is mainly used to evoke emotion in the audience and give a clue as to what the main tone is going to be in the film. Finally the last main aspect is the font that is used for the title and this can help set the overall pace of the scene with it being more common with crazier fonts having faster paced films and m...

Blog Post #45 Editing Stage: Two

Image
Today I will be talking about my editing process, and specifically the importance in cutting clips in film to fit the required screen time and cutting out unnecessary sequences. Also I will be editing the transitions in my film to straight cuts rather than animation cuts. The video shows me cutting certain clips to their correct length and not using any animation transitions. The reason why I used these editing techniques was to better convey my film and make the scenes feel more fluid and creative. But the most important thing was making sure that clips do not include bloopers or anything that could tint the films image. This also makes the films length either shorter or longer and it can dictate wether the scenes are faster paced or slow and calm.

Blog Post #44 Editing Stage: One

Image
Today I will be talking about the first stage in my editing process, which is to add the filmed clips. This is important because it is the beginning stages to creating a film with finding the best and most accessible clips to use. Now most of the time in film multiple takes are used in order to film one shot, so being able to distinguish the usable shot is important in this editing phase. There are mainly three stages in editing with this one being the one that starts them all. This stage allows for the clips to flow chronologically based on the order the you (the director/editor) put the clips and how they will fit in the film. This can also change the flow of the film with longer clips being in places where they might be out of place like in between quick cuts. But they could be in the right place like scenery shots that can help convey the setting better through the longer clips.  So in my film as you can see, the way that I clicked on the clips was the order that they wer...

Blog Post #43 Behind The Scenes Part: Four

Image
Today I will be continuing on the topic of shots that I have researched to be the most efficient in film and how I will use them.   This is because it becomes easier to convey the plot by introducing the characters in a long-shot, these long-shots to open a scene can help introduce the audience to the setting of the following the scene and also the characters that are going to be represented. For example for my opening shot at the characters, I was able to incorporate the scenery in the shot too. This is because of the use of the long shot, this helped me add a sense of setting and Mise-en-Scene along with identifying the characters in the scene. The use of Two-Person shots in my film helped better express emotions in the conversations between the actors. This also helps the audience better understand the idea that is being discussed between the characters in that specific scene. For example this occurs when the scout and the coach are discussing the capabilities of Saquon at the c...

Blog Post #42 Behind the scenes: Part Three

Image
Today I will be talking about the second stage in my filming process and how I used camera angles to better depict the scenery and facial expressions of actors. In my filming process I used a plethora of camera angles in order to convey the ideas and setting of the film to the fullest extent. The uses of camera angles were important as to creating an narrative in the scene too. The research I used helped me with selecting the best possible shots to use to increase the scenery in the scene, the emotions of the characters, and the actions of the characters. The research also helped me become more creative with my shots also this is because of the use of the film "Whiplash's" final two cuts where they went from eye to eye, I was able to incorporate this into my film.   The use of sky shots in my scenes help me display the lighting techniques I was able to use, with natural lighting being the main one. The aerial shots also help with conveying the scenery even further, showi...

Blog Post #41 Behind The Scenes Part: Two

Image
Today I will be talking about the costuming in Film and how I used it in my film. Another Aspect of costuming in film is being able to identify the right type of costuming for my actors based on the tone, setting, and lighting in the scene. Now first the tone of a scene can heavily affect the type of costuming for my characters because of the way colors make the audience feel. For example, White commonly is used in a neutral tone with the audience not meant to feel happy or sad but more or less interested. The color green is commonly used to convey happiness in film so if your scene is meant to be more happy then green is a good color for character costuming. But on the opposite sides of the color spectrum in film there is yellow and red. With red commonly being associated with anger and violence in film and if you as a director would want the audience to feel a sense of anger or unjust then red is a good costuming choice. Then last but not least there is yellow, yellow is often paired...

Blog Post #40 Behind The Scenes: Part One

Image
Today I will be talking about the first half of my filming process and how I utilized it. On February twenty-eighth I drove with my actors to Veterans Memorial Park where we would start the filming process by utilizing the surrounding environment with the opening shot. I was able to do this because of the vast vegetation next to the basketball courts at veterans, also by always by keeping my camera at a tilted angle it minimized glare from the sun. The filming process was made fairly easy because of the constant availability of key light though, so in turn it was a solid tradeoff for having to keep the camera tilted. Also, the action shots were fairly easy to make also because of the abundance of key light making the actors expressions more visible to the audience. We started the filming process by having the actors play an off-camera basketball game, this is so that when we were shooting the scenes the Mise-en-Scene was used to its fullest. This is through the sweat of the actors...

Blog Post #39 Opening shots

Image
Today I will be analyzing opening shots in film and how they are used to demonstrate the setting, and Mise-en-Scene in the scene. Opening shots are crucial in film for setting the tone of the scenes and helping to convey the setting in the upcoming shots. Opening shots can also help with introducing the characters in a film with the shot being important towards the audiences first reactions for these new characters. The use of the opening shot is an important factor in many big company films because it allows for them to use their high budget to create an immersive and vivid environment to hook the audience on the story of the opening scene. This is crucial if there are important plot points in these opening scenes. An example of this is the opening shot of Dune: Part Two with the vivid landscape and almost dream like lighting in the shot. This helps immerse the audience in the Mise-en-Scene and setting of the film, through the dark and warm environment that is shown in the openin...

Blog Post #38 Date/Time for Filming

Image
Today I am choosing the Date/Time that I am using to film for my film' opening two minutes The Date that I have chosen is Friday, February twenty-eighth. This is because I have no sports planned for this day and my schedule has an opening after my school hours. The actors that I have chosen for my film are also available for filming this day with little to no disruption in the process. This makes it easier for me to film on this day also because of the clear and sunny weather outside, which is crucial for my filming process because it will be taken outside. If the date selected was supposed to be rain filled it will make the Mise-en-Scene in film worse because of the wet actors not seeming more realistic to the viewer. The camera will also have problems with water landing on the lens, hence ruining the shots. But the most important aspect would be the lack of key light and lack of filler light, this can make the filming process impossible due to the lack of overall lighting in the ...

Blog Post #37 The Props

Image
Today I will be talking about the Prop that will be used in my film and how Prop's effect films. The Prop that is going to be used in my film is a Wilson Outdoor Basketball, the main reason why I used this basketball in my film is because this basketball is good for outdoor courts and it has very good grip. This makes it easier for the actors to dribble the basketball on the outdoor courts which is where we are filming. This is because of the good grip on the basketball and its ability to bounce well on concrete in comparison to other indoor basketballs. This ball is also new, this is because of the benefit that it adds to the Mise-en-Scene with a newer ball looking better on camera then a worn down one. So the use of this Prop can help with the Mise-en-Scene, and also with the actors ability to dribble the ball. The actors ability to dribble the ball is important because it adds to the fluidity in the scene and it makes the scene feel more realistic to the audience. If the ball w...

Blog post #36 Filming Location

Image
Today I will be talking about the filming location and why I chose it. This is Veterans Memorial Park (14333 Hicks Road), this place is a recreational center that is home to many things ranging from kids cheerleading to pickleball. This center has four main areas, the soccer fields, the left outdoor center, the right outdoor center, and the indoor area. The main area for my filming was the left outdoor center, this is because of its disperse vegetation, wildlife, and outdoor basketball courts that are newly redone. These courts are public and are not a very popular area like the indoor basketball courts, so it is easy to record there. The lighting will be natural because of the outdoor environment helping with the Mise-en-Scene aspects of the film. The vegetated area next to the basketball courts makes for an imagery filled scene that can immerse the audience in the beautiful environment. These courts also are newly redone, this helps make the film look more professional and it he...

Blog Post #35 The Main Character

Image
Today I will be analyzing the importance of main characters in film and how they are able to control the pacing of the film. The main character of a show or film is the one that is the focus of the plot. This can be through their actions, or through the actions of side characters of that film. Mainly though the plot centers around the actions of the main character. But it is also very common for a side character to be the one to start the rising the action in the film at hand. for example, in the film "Iron Man", this is through the actions and decisions of "Tony Stark" aka "Iron Man" the rising action is started when Tony goes to an event to display his new "Jericho" missile. But then he is ambushed by a terrorist group, this is the start of the rising action in this film.  But in another example, the side character Hella in the film "Thor Ragnarök", is instead the one to lead the hero/main character on his plot. This is an example of...

Blog Post #34 Story-Boarding

Image
Today I will be creating a storyboard for my film's opening forty-five second sequence. This storyboard details the camera angles that I will use, the details in the shot and the transitions between each of the shots to create the first scene. Now not all of this Storyboard will be used in the film, but many shots will be influenced by the ideas used. For example, the title sequence will most likely be used in the filming process of the film with the sky as the background. Also having a storyboard for your film can help generate new ideas that can be incorporated in order to create an immersive experience for the audience. Also, a storyboard can help with shots that use little to no dialogue because it allows for the director to think more directly bout the camera angles and the Mise-en-Scene aspects of the film a little about the acting skills being incorporated. This is heavily detailed in my film's first 2 minutes with the scenery and Mise-en-Scene being the main aspects of...

Blog Post #33 Actors Part: Two

Image
Today I am continuing talking about the actors in my film. The next actor that I will be discussing is Carson Scoville, Carson has experience in basketball and has extensive knowledge of the NBA. This knowledge of basketball led to me choosing him as the scout in my film. Carson is also a very good actor with him commonly helping me in certain film projects that I am tied to. Carson best fits the scout also because of his knowledge of playing at a high level in sports, with him being a part of a cheer team that went to nationals this last year. This shows that he knows what it means to play at a high level in a sport. My final actor in the film is Vincent Mendez, I chose Vincent because of his reliability in the set time and his prior filming experience. Vincent is very calm and collected when filming on set and is able to display leadership throughout the filming process. Vincents ability to act is the main reason why I chose him though, he has numerous accounts of filming experience,...

Blog Post #32 Actors Part: One

Image
Today I will be talking about the actors being used in my film The main actor in my film is Cyle Canales and he will be filling in the role of Saquon, this is through his resemblance of my idea of Saquon that was expressed in my first blog post. Also, it is through his current basketball experience with many scenes throughout the film being centered around playing basketball. Cyle also helps with the representation in my film because of his Panamanian lineage. This can help my film also reach more of an audience of Panamanians because of his ethnic background. Cyle also has been a close friend of mine so this will make it easier for the shots to be filmed with little complaint from the actor. The next actor is Kasey McCloud, I chose Kasey because of his basketball experience and acting experience with him commonly acting in films throughout the school. Kasey also helps with the representation of the film through his ethnic background. Kasey will be filling the role of one of Saquo...
